For my English Readers task I have chosen to read The Great Gatsby, a tragic novel settled in New York during the 20s’, specifically in Long Island. There lives one of the wealthiest men of the Big Apple and he is known for the extravagant parties he throws every Saturday in his gothic mansion. What no one knows is what he looks like, or what he does. The truth is he only has one friend and separated from the woman he loved to fight in war, but Nick Carraway, his friend and narrator of the story arranges a reunion with them.
The woman is named Daisy, and she married a wealthy jealous, sexist and hypocrite man after getting tired of waiting for Gatsby. She falls in love again with Gatsby and Tom, his husband, gets suspicious, which is why he confronts Gatsby. That leads to the accidental murder of Tom’s lover, and the dead woman’s wife wants revenge. Gatsby says it was him who killed her to protect Daisy, who was the one truly driving the car.
The day after, Gatsby gets shot by Myrtle, the dead woman’s husband and he dies alone waiting a call from Daisy that he will never hear.
No one showed up to his funeral except for Nick, who leaves the town right after and writes the story of The Great Gatsby.
I think there is depth in this book. For example: Gatsby symbolizes the American dream since he was born poor and became one of the wealthiest men in NYC because of his optimism and his hard work, and when he dies, the author kills that dream.
I really liked this story because I have always loved the lifestyle from the 20s. I also love romantic tragedies so I recommend you this book of your interests are similar to mine. I think it is full of emotion and I would definitely read it again someday.
